Leeds United are reportedly trying to beat Brighton and Hove Albion to sign Liverpool midfielder James Milner on a free transfer this summer.

The 37-year-old is out of contract at Anfield this summer. And it is expected that he has agreed to a one-year contract to join Brighton.

However, the latest Daily Mail indicates that Leeds may hope to bring Milner to join the army if they successfully escape relegation.

Brighton are said to be the front runners for his signature with a number of offers on the table for the 37-year-old. Milner came through the youth set-up at Leeds. Before leaving for Newcastle United in 2004 and is still held in high regard by the Elland Road faithful.

Milner was a youngster from Leeds’ academy. And made his debut for the club at the age of 16 in 2002.

He signed a five-year contract in 2003 but was sold to Newcastle United just 12 months later due to Leeds’ financial difficulties.

The midfielder then went on to join Aston Villa where he impressed. and moved to Manchester City

Milner joined Liverpool on a free transfer in 2015 and has won numerous trophies during his nine years on Merseyside.
