Cleverley, meanwhile, only left Watford in May after 14 months in charge. His first managerial role, having guided the Hornets to a 14th-place finish in the Championship in 2024/25.

The Athletic reports that Plymouth are in advanced talks to appoint Tom Cleverley as their new manager.

The 35-year-old, who won 13 caps for England, announced his retirement from football in 2023. Before starting his coaching career with Watford’s youth system and stepping up to take charge of the first team following the sacking of Valerien Ismael.

Cleverley played 146 times for Watford over seven seasons. Having previously played for Manchester United, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and Everton.

Cleverley was sacked by the Hornets in May having missed out on the play-offs. After a poor second half of the season as Watford faded badly to finish 14th.

His 14 months at the helm was the longest tenure of any boss at Vicarage Road since Javi Gracia’s reign from January 2018 to September 2019.

In total, Cleverley was in charge for 60 games, winning 20, drawing 14 and losing 26.
