Hasenhüttl was sacked after Wolfsburg finished 11th last season. A continued decline since Oliver Glasner led the Wolves to a Champions League place in 2020-21. They have since finished 12th, 8th, 12th under Mark van Bommel, Florian Kohfeldt and Niko Kovac and 11th under Hasenhüttl.

Before Wolfsburg brought in former Go Ahead Eagles coach Simonis as their new manager and signed a contract until 2027. The 40-year-old coach led the club to Dutch Cup glory last season. Their first major trophy in 92 years, and also led the team to a seventh-place finish in the Eredivisie.

‘I can’t wait to take on this challenge and work with the team, the staff and the environment. I’ve had very good and comprehensive conversations at a high level. With Peter Christensen, Sebastian Schindzielorz and Sebastian Rudolph, and I immediately felt this was the right decision. I’m looking forward to working at the highest level in a very strong and exciting league.’ said Simonis.
